Samy's Curry began in 1955 as a humble eatery inside what was then a British Army canteen at Dempsey Road. When the army withdrew, the canteen building survived and Samy's stayed put. Generations of Singaporeans have eaten banana-leaf meals here under the spinning ceiling fans — fish-head curry, mutton mysore, the famous masala chicken, unlimited rice refills. The surrounding Dempsey enclave has gentrified beyond recognition over the decades into a luxury-restaurant district; Samy's hasn't changed.
