The story
Samy's started in 1955 as a humble eatery inside what was then a British Army canteen at Dempsey Road. When the army left, the canteen survived and Samy's stayed put. Generations of Singaporeans have eaten banana-leaf meals here under the spinning ceiling fans — fish-head curry, mutton mysore, the famous masala chicken. The Dempsey enclave around it has gentrified beyond recognition; Samy's hasn't.
