Thaipusam is one of Singapore's most visually striking religious events. Tamil Hindu devotees, fulfilling personal vows to Lord Murugan, carry kavadis (elaborate altars, some held in place by skewers piercing the body) on a roughly 4 km walk from Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple on Serangoon Road to Sri Thendayuthapani Temple on Tank Road. The procession runs through the night and into the morning. Public chanting and music were banned for many decades and only partially restored in recent years — a long-running tension between religious practice and Singapore's noise regulations. Spectators line the route; cameras are welcome.
