Name origins

Race Course Road is named after a racecourse that no longer exists

Singapore's curry strip was named after a 19th-century racetrack.

Race Course Road — Singapore's most concentrated stretch of North Indian and South Indian restaurants — is named after the Singapore Sporting Club's first racetrack, which operated here from 1843 to 1933. The course gave the road its name; the road outlasted the course. By the 1960s and 1970s, the strip had taken on its current identity as Singapore's 'curry strip', with restaurants like Muthu's Curry (1969) anchoring it. Today walking from one end to the other gives you a tour of Singapore's Indian dining history in under 500 metres.
